Death
In his native village Tomar was involved in a land dispute with his relatives over ancestral property for many years. Despite his fame as an athlete he was provided with little or no assistance from the police and local administration. After many incidents of harassment, heated arguments and death threats from his relatives he eventually turned to banditry and became a dacoit in the Chambal Valley.

It was on 1 October 1981 that Circle Inspector Mahendra Pratap Singh Chauhan and his team of six trapped and killed Paan Singh along with ten of his gang members after a gunfight that lasted more than 12 hours. Chauhan had been tipped off about Tomar's arrival by one of the village elders.
Some suggest it was after he fearlessly gave an interview to a local newspaper in Gwalior that the administration started to take his case seriously, having considered this an act of defiance. At the time he had a reward of 10,000 rupees on his head.

In a newspaper it said when Paan Singh was shot he was still alive and was asking for water: "Any rajput here who could please give me some water"; Hawaldar Tribhuwan Singh started walking to paan singh for a bit of water but Circle inspector shouted on him: "Tribhuwan, daciot has no caste". However, police denied this.

Recently film got released on Pan Singh tomar acted by Irrfan Khan.
Story of an athlete of a world class, seven times national champion at Steeple Chase in 50s and 60s, a participant at 1958 Tokyo Asian Games and his journey as a “baaghi” as Irrfan Khan playing as Paan Singh Tomar repeats in the movie is the backdrop of the story.
No doubt Paan Singh Tomar, the persona is the winner of the movie, a sportsman who faded with time and despite bringing laurels to the nation was forced to rise against the law. This movie can be listed as one of the best movie of Irrfan Khan and his natural acting has made Paan Singh Tomar alive on screen. paan singh tomar original story.
